Buying dog bowls: how to choose the right one

Buying dog bowls: materials

Dog bowls are made from different materials. In general, they are non-toxic products that do not interfere with the taste or properties of the food. In any case, we should choose the most suitable option for our pet.

• Plastic bowl: These are usually the cheapest. They are very light and their main advantage is that they are very easy to wash. However, plastic bowls can cause allergic reactions in pets, so if you notice redness on their muzzle, consult your vet; it's likely caused by the bowl they use to eat.
• Ceramic bowl: These are very pretty and comfortable for your pet. However, ceramic is very fragile and easily damaged by knocks. Also, being a porous material, it is harder to clean than plastic and other materials.
• Steel bowl: These are very light and resistant to knocks, and steel is also very easy to wash. If you choose this option, you should select quality bowls, as in many cases, inexpensive steel is used in their manufacture, which may contain toxic substances.

Special bowls based on their characteristics

Some breeds have special characteristics and require specific bowls due to their morphology. Here are some examples:

• Tall dogs need raised feeders. Dogs should not bend their necks excessively when eating, as this can lead to cervical problems in the long term.
• Use narrow-mouthed bowls if you have a dog with long ears, to prevent them from getting their ears in the feeder.
• Short-snouted dogs need shallow bowls, making food more accessible and allowing them to eat without anxiety.
• Conversely, dogs with long snouts need deep bowls to accommodate their noses.

The advantages of raised feeders

There are many reasons why this type of feeder is more appropriate for pets. Here are some of them:

• Dogs often lift their heads, dropping food remnants. Raised feeders prevent these remnants from reaching the floor.
• Elevated feeders reduce humidity because they don't come into contact with the ground, thus preventing mold and bacterial growth in the long term.
• Raised feeders allow dogs not to have to bend their heads excessively to eat, which aids digestion.
• For dogs with poor appetites, whether due to age, illness, or any other reason, raised feeders encourage eating, as they require less effort and are closer to the nose, allowing them to smell the food immediately.
