Pet abandonment

Pet abandonment in summer and its consequences

Every summer, a sad situation recurs, affecting thousands of animals in our country: pet abandonment. The case of dogs is particularly serious; one only needs to look at some figures that, unfortunately, are repeated year after year.
In Spain, more than 200 dogs are abandoned every day, a very worrying figure to fight against.
Pet abandonment, especially of dogs, is 20% higher during the summer months.
27% of abandoned dogs are puppies.
These figures should make owners and authorities reflect on possible solutions.

Alternatives to pet abandonment

At tQel, we want to remind you that there are alternatives to abandonment, and with each one, we prevent more pets from being abandoned, especially during the summer months. The best solutions are:
Associations and shelters are the best help against abandonment. By the way, if you are thinking of getting a new pet, don't forget that thousands of dogs are waiting to be adopted and given a second chance.
The use of microchips also prevents pet loss. In many cases, a lost dog ends up in a shelter because it's impossible to locate its owner. Sometimes we think a dog is abandoned when it's actually lost; if it has a microchip, it's easier to find its owners.
Raising awareness is everyone's business. The best solution is to prevent this type of behavior. To achieve this, we must be aware of the seriousness of pet abandonment and be responsible for our actions. When a dog comes into our home, it becomes another member of the family. Would you abandon a family member? Then don't abandon your dog; it doesn't deserve it. If a dog comes into your life at Christmas or on a special date, it's important to think about what you will do with it in the summer; there are many solutions.

The cruel abandonment of hunting dogs

Dogs used for hunting suffer the most abandonment by owners.
Many shelters take in greyhounds and other hunting dog breeds, which is why we remind you once again that if you have a dog for hunting-related activities and cannot care for it, the easiest thing to do is to contact a shelter or association; avoid abandoning them.
At tQel, we join the summer campaign #NoToAbandonment, reminding everyone once again that the problem exists, it is serious, and there are solutions. Do not abandon your pet; there is a solution.
